Simon Pegg on Having the Borg as the Next 'Star Trek' Villain

Yahoo Movies had the opportunity to speak with members of the cast of Star Trek Beyond. We asked Simon Pegg, who stars at Scotty and co-wrote the film, why we haven’t had the Borg as the villain in the franchise reboot yet.

“The Borg are a Next Generation manifestation,” Pegg explained. “We didn’t meet the Borg until we got a lot further out, which occurred in Star Trek: The Next Generation. This is the original series, and we are only at a certain point in our exploration of the galaxy, so we haven’t uncovered that particular hornet’s nest yet.”

The Borg are among the most interesting villains in Star Trek lore. They are a collective consciousness that conquers other species and then assimilates them. They’ve become a fan favorite right up there with Klingons and Khan. Pegg knows this as well as anybody, so he didn’t completely dismiss the idea of the Borg appearing at some point.

“This is a different timeline and there are different possibilities, who knows?” Pegg noted. “That might happen, you know? That would be an interesting thing to see, a villain from The Next Generation meet the original series cast, you never know.”

The English actor and writer then offered up an idea for a future installment of the sci-fi franchise that, uh, would serve a movie well. “It would be more like the original series if they landed on a planet and found Björn Borg, the former tennis professional, living a life on his own, stranded, Robinson Crusoe–style,” Pegg said, drawing laughter. “I think that would be good. Write that down. Somebody write that down.”
