Simon Cowell Says Why He Won’t Be Returning to ‘American Idol’

Savannah Guthrie interviewed Simon Cowell on Today, and Cowell revealed that he will not be returning to American Idol. The singing competition is being rebooted by ABC, but the judges have not yet been announced.

Cowell explained that he was in talks with the show’s producers, but he was ultimately committed to his current show, America’s Got Talent.

Cowell hinted at an American Idol reunion, however. He said of his former colleagues Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul: “I don’t think there was ever any chance of me coming back on that show but with that crowd 100 percent on something else.”

Ryan Seacrest is in talks to return as host for the new Idol, and Cowell took a moment to throw a quick dig at his former colleague. He said, “I’ve got a good idea how this could work for him. He hosts the show, he judges the show, he’s the only performer. And that way he gets what he wants.”
