Silver Springs Shores man, 80, hit and killed by a car when crossing Maricamp Road on foot
SILVER SPRINGS SHORES — An 80-year-old man trying to cross a busy roadway on foot was hit and killed by a car Thursday evening.
The traffic fatality was the 75th of the year recorded by the Florida Highway Patrol in Marion County. The agency responded to 80 traffic deaths in 2021. Those numbers don't include traffic deaths in the cities of Ocala, Belleview and Dunnellon.

Here is what happened Thursday evening
Troopers said the pedestrian, who was walking with a bicycle, was on the east shoulder of Maricamp Road, attempting to cross the road near Water Road.
Authorities said a Chevy Impala, driven by a woman, was eastbound in the outside lane. FHP officials said the man walked into the road and was struck by the car. Upon impact, the victim was thrown and landed in the outside lane.
The crash happened near a Marion County Sheriff's Office substation. A deputy who was in the area pronounced the pedestrian deceased shortly after 6 p.m., troopers said.
Troopers identified the pedestrian as an 80-year-old man from Silver Springs Shores. They said the driver was a 19-year-old Silver Springs Shores woman who was heading home. The patrol no longer provides names in its news releases.
At the time of the crash, authorities said, it was just turning dark. The woman was not injured.
A section of the roadway was blocked to allow troopers to investigate the crash.
It's not the first time a pedestrian has been hit and killed at or near that intersection. In January 2021, a 61-year-old Silver Springs Shores man died after he was hit by a car there.
