Whenever the inevitable Swingers reboot comes to pass, you can count Thomas Middleditch in. Speaking in an interview with Playboy, the Silicon Valley star opened up about his experiences with the “swinging” lifestyle and how it’s helped his marriage.

After tying the knot with wife Mollie Gates in 2015, the actor quickly realized he needed a different kind of union. He told this to his partner and “instead of saying ‘Fuck you, I’m out,’ she was like, ‘Let’s figure this out.'”

The actor first nodded at his progressive interest over the summer when he discussed hanging with Godzilla: King of the Monsters writer Zach Shields at an adult swinger’s club. It wasn’t his intention to get involved with “the lifestyle,” but the nontraditional approach suits him. The actor’s also not too worried about how others might view his preferences “because repression sucks.”

“I’d always thought I was a romantic and that when I fall in love, that stuff fades away,” he remarked. “It does for some years—enough to be like, ‘I should get married, and I’ll be different.’ But it’s part of me. If that’s part of your being and it feels important to you, find a way to explore it.”

Middleditch’s marriage with Gates may be an open one, but the two define their sexual explorations with clear rules “and communication, to the point where it’s like, ‘All right, we’ve got to stop. Chill.’ I’m gas, and she’s brakes. This is actually the premise for a comedy series we’re writing together.”

For now, just catch the rest of Silicon Valley before it’s over.
