Siblings send handwritten notes and gift cards to healthcare workers

Two San Francisco siblings are sending cards to thank healthcare workers for their service.

Prabhleen and Mantej Lamba started Cards 4 Covid Heroes as a way to show their appreciation to those on the frontline of the pandemic. The brother and sister were inspired by one of the Sikh faith’s core principles known as “seva” or “selfless service.”

“We were really moved by this and we knew that we had to involve our community and take action,” 15-year-old Prabhleen told the Associated Press.

The Lamba siblings collected over 250 thank you cards from their community in just a couple of months. They sent the cards to workers at four hospitals including UC Davis Medical Center, the Los Angeles Community Hospital, the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center and the Chandler Regional Medical Center in Arizona. Each envelope also included a $10 VISA gift card.

The handwritten cards are also uniquely decorated. One reads “Heroes work here.” While another made by a local Girl Scout Troup says “Thank you for going to work every day and being there when we need it the most.” Community members can even opt for an e-card version that Prabhleen and Mantej print out and deliver.

“During these times of darkness and uncertainty, we just wanted to try to shine some light on the fact that we do have true heroes working on the front lines who are trying their hardest to save people’s lives,” 17-year-old Mantej told the Associated Press.

The siblings have gotten a ton of kind of feedback from the workers including photos of them holding the cards.

“They know that, ‘OK, we’re not alone,'” Prabhleen said. “And there are people who do support us and care for us.”

Cards 4 Covid Heroes is currently raising money on GoFundMe to provide more cards to frontline workers.
