Shyrley Rodriguez & Chinese Stars Added To ‘Pacific Rim 2’; Cole Sand Enrolls In ‘Magic Camp’

UPDATE with additional Pacific Rim castings: Shyrley Rodriguez as been added to the cast of Legendary/ Universal’s Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham’s 2013 sci-fi film that stars John Boyega, Scott Eastwood and Chinese actress Jing Tian. Also announced as cast additions today are fellow Chinese actors Zhang Jin, Wesley Wong, Lily Ji, Chen Zitong, Lan Yingying and Qian Yongchen, with cameos by Xiao Yang and Korean actor Kim Jeong-Hoon.

Steven S. DeKnight directs the pic, which is currently in production with a storyline that has “a strong connection to China,” according to Jack Gao of Wanda, which owns Legendary and made the announcement today. The pic is scheduled to hit theaters February 23, 2018.

Meanwhile Rodriguez, who can currently be seen on Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix musical series The Get Down, has also landed a role in the film Wheels, the directorial debut indie from Top Chef and Project Runway helmer Paul Starkman. That film follows Max, a teen from Brooklyn, who pursues his dream of becoming a DJ. Rodriguez plays the love interest Liza, a neighborhood girl who is strong willed, street smart, and sees the good in the world. She is repped by Innovative.

Cole Sand joins Jeffrey Tambor, Gillian Jacobs and Adam Devine in Disney’s Magic Camp, written by Dan Gregor and Doug Mand and directed by Mark Waters. The film follows 12-year-old Theo who attends Magic Camp as he copes with his father’s death. Tambor plays the camp leader, and Devine plays Theo’s mentor. Sand is cast as Nathan, Theo’s best friend at camp. Suzanne Todd is producing the film and said begin shooting in December.

Sand has held recurring roles on shows like Masters Of Sex, Parenthood and Austin & Ally. He is repped by Coast to Coast Talent Group, MC Talent Management, and attorney Steve Younger.
