We've been swamped with festivals this year, but there's still time for one more before the summer comes to a close. That's right, Shrekfest is back in Milwaukee.

Here's what you need to know.

When is Shrekfest?

Shrekfest is on September 2, 2023 from noon to 9 p.m. It is free to attend.

Where is Shrekfest?

Shrekfast takes place at Humboldt Park, at 3000 S. Howell Ave. in Bay View.

How many people are coming to Shrekfest this year?

Last year's festival drew approximately three to four thousands attendees, said event organizer Kelly Main. Festival organizers are expecting similar or greater turnout to this year's event.

What's the live music lineup playing at Shrekfest this year?

Spano Cabano performs at 12:30 p.m.; Swamp Stars at 1:45 p.m.; Ska Inc. at 3:45 p.m.; Star 67 at 5:45 p.m.

There will a roar contest, costume contest, and onion-eating contest

Shrekfest hosts three contests: the onion-eating, roar and costume contest. Participants are judged by Shrekfest's organizers.

The roar contest is at 3 p.m., the costume contest is at 4:30 p.m. and the onion-eating contest is at 7 p.m.

That means it's time to start practicing your loudest, most ogre-like roar (but maybe let your neighbors know before hand). The person with the loudest roar gets a prize.

For the costume contest, there are multiple categories, which aren't disclosed until the contest. So come in your most creative costume. Shrek? Fiona? Lord Farquaad? Up to you.

Lastly, there's the onion eating contest where multiple contestants are given a whole onion and whoever eats it first wins.

Prizes are being sponsored by the Eduators Credit Union and FM102.1.

Will there be a screening of 'Shrek'?

Yes. A screening of "Shrek" is at 7:30 p.m.

Shrekfest has grown dramatically from its beginning in Madison

In 2014, founder Grant Duffrin saw an ad on Facebook for a festival called Shrekfest. Showing up, he was really disappointed when he discovered the event was fake.

So, he thought, why not make it a real event? In 2014, he hosted a small screening of the movie in Madison and dressed up. About a dozen people attended the first festival, and he continued growing the event every year.

When the COVID-19 pandemic happened, festival organizers shifted the event to online. Last year, the event moved to Milwaukee, where most of the organizers live, and expanded to a larger park.

Yes, there is a Shrekfest 2023 after party

You betcha. They'll be an after party at the X-Ray Arcade, 5036 S. Packard Ave., Cudahy from 8 p.m. to close. To RSVP, visit xrayarcade.com.
