Showtime will revive 'Twin Peaks' in 2016

UPDATE: While casting for the new limited series has not been determined for the limited series, producer Mark Frost said he and Lynch would like to see old faces return. And, while it has not been confirmed, original series star Kyle MacLachlan tweeted a hint that, at the very least, he is open to returning to his Agent Dale Cooper suit.

ORIGINAL STORY: Fans of David Lynch and Mark Frost’s Twin Peaks have spent years hoping for a continuation of the two-season series, taking virtually any mention of the show as a sign of life still left in the project. And now, thanks to Showtime, it finally looks like it’s time for some more damn good coffee.

Twin Peaks will be returning in a limited series run, EW has confirmed. Both Lynch and Frost tweeted a video from the official Showtime YouTube page on Monday along with the text, “Dear Twitter friends … it is happening again.” The included video shows a quick shot of Laura Palmer along with the Twin Peaks welcome sign, as “2016” and the Showtime logo appear on screen, set to the Twin Peaks main theme.

Showtime confirmed the Twitter tease in an official announcement today. The limited series run will consist of nine episodes, all written and produced by Lynch and Frost and directed by Lynch. The series is set in the present day and will follow up on the story and lore established in the original show’s 29 episodes and feature-length pilot. No castmembers have been announced for the series, but it will go into production in 2015 for an expected 2016 airing, 25 years after the original series ended.

Lynch and Frost prepped fans for the announcement, each identically tweeting out a cryptic quote from the show on Oct. 3. For eagle-eyed fans, they also sent those tweets out at 11:30 a.m., the same time the show’s Dale Cooper first entered into Twin Peaks.

Adding fuel to the rumor fires in September was a picture of Kyle MacLachlan, who is currently starring on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., having lunch with Lynch. MacLachlan is not confirmed to appear in the show, however, and unfortunately, they were not eating at the Double R Diner.
