It’s Showtime! Here’s Our 2024 Summer Movie Preview

As we roll into Memorial Day weekend, t it’s time to get excited about all the blockbusters set to hit movie theaters in the summer. From fan favorite franchises to moving biopics to compelling dramas, there’s no shortage of interesting new films to plan your schedule around. To help you prepare for the onslaught of releases, check out our 2024 summer movie preview.

June 7: ‘Bad Boys: Ride or Die’

The fourth entry in the series finds Marcus and Mike framed as criminals and on the run. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are joined by franchise vets John Salley and Joe Pantoliano, as well as Tasha Smith, who takes over the role of Marcus’ wife, Theresa.

June 14: ‘Inside Out 2’

The sequel to the Pixar film finds Riley hitting her teen years, which means new emotions are joining the crew. Amy Poehler’s Joy and Phyllis Smith’s Sadness return alongside newcomers Maya Hawke as Anxiety and Ayo Edebiri as Envy.

June 19: ‘Black Barbie: A Documentary’ - Netflix

This documentary chronicles the history and development of the first Black Barbie in 1980. These stories of how Black employees forced major brands to evolve are always fascinating.

June 21: ‘Thelma’

June Squibb is a grandma on a mission as she goes on a revenge tour through Los Angeles to get to a phone scammer who stole from her. She’s joined by a friend, played by Richard Roundtree in his final role.

June 28: ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’

Lupita Nyong’o and Djimon Hounsou star in this prequel that tells us what happened when the monsters first appeared.

July 3: ‘Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ - Netflix

Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley is back in Beverly Hills to help out Billy Rosewood with a case and he’s still causing a ridiculous amount of trouble and property damage.

July 11: ‘Tyler Perry’s Divorce in the Black’ - Prime Video

In typical Tyler Perry fashion, Ava (Meagan Good) is a woman who thinks her marriage is ideal until she finds out her husband (Cory Hardrict) is actually a bad guy.

July 12: ‘Descendants: The Rise Of Red’ - Disney+

The fourth “Descendants” film finds China Anne McClain’s Uma taking over as Auradon Prep’s principal. She invites Red, the Queen of Hearts’ daughter, to join, which leads to major trouble. The real headline here is that Brandy is finally returning as Cinderella, along with Paolo Montalban as Prince Charming. It’s past time for our Princess to be officially recognized within the canon.

July 12: ‘Sing Sing’

Oscar nominee Colman Domingo stars alongside formerly incarcerated actors as they explore the humanity and dignity they find in a prison theater program.

July 26: ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman bring their complicated, yet hilarious, friendship to the big screen in the third entry in the “Deadpool” franchise. This time around the multiverse is explored as Deadpool officially enters the MCU.

July 26: ‘The Fabulous Four’

Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullaly and Sheryl Lee Ralph are friends who take an unexpected trip to an old friend’s (Bette Midler) surprise wedding. These kinds of movies usually include plenty of middle-aged woman shenanigans.

Aug. 9: ‘Borderlands’

Kevin Hart, Cate Blanchett, Jack Black and Jamie Lee Curtis lead a star-studded cast in this film adaptation of the popular video game series. Movie versions of video games don’t traditionally go well, but the trailer for this one looks funny.

Aug 16: ‘The Union’ - Netflix

Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg are spies who find themselves back in the espionage game as they’re drawn into an adventure through Europe. Let’s be honest: This is probably exactly what we think it is.

Aug. 23: ‘The Crow’

After a winding road through development hell, Bill Skarsgård stars as Eric Draven, the rock star turned undead vigilante, with FKA twigs as his true love, Shelly. Nothing will top the emotional resonance of the cult classic starring Brandon Lee, but we’ll try to keep an open mind.

Aug. 23: ‘Blink Twice’

Zoë Kravitz makes her directorial debut with this thriller starring Naomi Ackie as a cocktail waitress who heads to a tech billionaire’s (Channing Tatum) private island, where things go terribly wrong.
