In one of the latest entries in the ever-growing file of tragicomic American firearm incidents, an Iowa man was shot by his own dog last month. Richard Remme said that his dog disabled his gun’s safety and then stepped on the trigger, shooting him in the leg while the pair was roughhousing.

Naturally, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert wasn’t about to let that story slip by un-parodied, so the show released a clip aping the NRA’s infamous PSAs featuring spokesperson Dana Loesch. And in the context of the things Loesch really has said-that American Marines urinating on the corpses of Taliban soldiers was “cool,” for example-arming dogs seems pretty sensible.

"The liberal media wants you to believe guns are dangerous, just because you can be shot by a dog," says The Late Show’s Loesch lookalike. "They want you to think it’s ridiculous to give a dog access to an automatic rifle. But here’s the thing-unless I’ve misread it, the second amendment guarantees the right for bears to have arms. And what’s a bear but a large dog?"
