'The show did break me': Tom Holland taking a year off after filming 'The Crowded Room'

Following the filming of his latest series, Tom Holland announced he plans to take a year off of acting.

The actor starred and executive produced in the psychological thriller series "The Crowded Room," which premieres June 9 on Apple TV+. He told Extra in an interview the role was a "tough time," and the show had him exploring some emotions he had never experienced before.

"The show did break me," he said in the interview. "There did come a time where I was like 'I need to have a break,' and I disappeared, I went to Mexico for a week, had some time on a beach and lay low. I'm now taking a year off, and that is the result of how difficult this show was."

"The Crowded Room" also stars Amanda Seyfried and Emmy Rossum. According to Apple TV+, the miniseries tells the story of a man that is arrested following a "shocking" crime that takes place in Manhattan during the summer of 1979.

Holland is best known for his role in the "Spider-Man" franchise as the titular character, whose real identity is teenager Peter Parker. He has also starred as Peter in other Marvel movies such as "Venom: Let There Be Carnage," "Avengers: Endgame" and his debut in "Captain America: Civil War."

In addition to "The Crowded Room," Holland is due to star in another "Spider-Man" film in 2024 and an undated biopic on Fred Astaire, according to IMDb.

Holland likes the “responsibility” of introducing a Hollywood legend to a younger generation, he previously told USA TODAY's Brian Truitt regarding the biopic. “It's also just nice for me to put the tap shoes back on,” said the actor, who got his start in a West End production of “Billy Elliot the Musical.”

“We’re still at very, very early stages, looking for directors, which is really exciting. It's also very stressful. I miss the days where you get a job and just get told who you're working with.”
