“The Late Show” Canceled for Second Week as Stephen Colbert Recovers from Ruptured Appendix

The host revealed last week that he needed surgery, joking "All emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas"

The Late Show will remain on a hiatus as host Stephen Colbert continues to recover from a health-related issue.

"I’m listening to my doctors and continuing to rest and heal. Thank you for all your well wishes and I’ll see you soon," Colbert wrote on Threads Sunday.

On Monday, CBS released a schedule for this week's episodes, featuring exclusively repeats. Sarah Paulson, Jason Isbell, Mark Ruffalo, Nicki Minaj, Sara Bareilles and Rep. Liz Cheney were among the previously scheduled guests, reports Deadline.

The schedule change comes after Colbert, 59, recently revealed that his appendix had ruptured.

“Sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week,” he said on Threads just after Thanksgiving. “I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? Gravy boat capsize?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix.”

“I’m grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the kids for putting up with me. Going forward, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas,” he added.

The repeated episodes this week will feature guest appearances from Kerry Washington, Willie Nelson, Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff and Lindsay Mendez, and more.

Instead of promoting a new episode, the show's Instagram account featured a clip from Colbert's Oct. 10 interview with Rep. Maxwell Frost on Monday.

Colbert’s health also altered the show’s production in mid-October when he tested positive for COVID-19 and made the decision to broadcast the program remotely from his home.

"MEANWHILE... The Late Show will look a little bit different tonight because Stephen is At Home with Covid (he’s ok!)," an Oct. 16 post read on The Late Show’s Instagram and X (formerly Twitter) accounts. "But be sure to tune in as the show will go on remotely with Monologue, Meanwhile, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Ricky Velez. #whatyearisit?

At that time, Rachel Maddow, Talking Heads and Jon Batiste were named as talent to be featured in the lineup for The Late Show guests later that week.

A couple of days later, Colbert also gave fans a glimpse into how he was doing his best to get over his symptoms.

"Sorry to say, per doctor’s orders, I’m going to be out for the rest of the week," his social media message read. "Resting up so that I can deliver the hand crafted, artisanal talk show that we so enjoy serving you."

The television personality's message included a photo of a care package sent to him consisting of a letter with his name hand-written on an envelope, a brand new pack of socks and a bag of onions.

Colbert joked that the thoughtful gift came from fellow late-night host Jimmy Fallon.

"In the meantime, a heady blend of Paxlovid and onions in my socks (thank you, Fallon) will be rebuilding my immune system," he continued.
