With the 2019-20 NBA season well under way, fans are thrilled to finally watch their favourite teams take the court after a long offseason. And for the real heads out there, the release of several new signature sneakers is just another thing to get excited about.
We’ve seen new shoes from the usual suspects: Air Jordan, Kyrie, KD and more. But we’ve also seen some releases from brands that have been out of the NBA game for quite some time. It’s certainly an exciting time to be a sneakerhead.
Here are a few of the best sneakers to be released so far this season.
I’d be remiss to start a conversation about basketball sneakers without mentioning the iconic Air Jordan brand. Former Duke star Zion Williamson debuted the latest Jordans after signing the richest sneaker deal for an NBA rookie in Nike’s history. At just 13.3 ounces, the Air Jordan XXXIVs are one of the lightest shoes created by the Jordan brand.
They come in two colourways: White/Red/Black (pictured above), as well as Blue Void/Green Glow/Black/Metallic Silver. The latter pair is slightly more expensive ($231 CAD) but as you can see, they look pretty sharp!
Adidas has released the latest edition of James Harden’s signature shoe, and they look as sharp as ever. The Harden Vol. 4s come in two colourways: Cloud White/Core Black/Pale Nude (pictured above), and Bright Cyan/Real Pink/Cloud White.
There may not be a better time to drop your first signature shoe than after being named the MVP. Giannis Antetokounmpo parlayed his monstrous 2018-19 season into an exciting launch for his new shoe, the Zoom Freak 1. These shoes feature “extra-responsive cushioning, forefoot lockdown and multi-directional traction needed to complement his freakishly athletic game.”
The shoes come in three colourways: Hyper Royal/Blue Haro/White/Metallic Golf (pictured above), Noble Red/Bright Crimson/Bicycle Yellow/Blackened Blue, Black/Photo Blue/Metallic Dark Grey/Multi-Colour, and White/University Red/Metallic Gold. These shoes are currently being worn by NBA stars including De’Aaron Fox, Chandler Hutchinson and Antetokounmpo’s brother, Kostas.
For the first time in seven years, Converse is back in the NBA sneaker scene with the release of the sleek All Star Pro BB. Phoenix Suns small forward Kelly Oubre was the first to wear Converse’s latest basketball sneaker when he laced them up at the beginning of the 2019-20 season. They come in a wide range of colourways: WHITE/BOLD MANDARIN-BLACK (pictured above), BLACK/VOLT, WHITE/BOLD MANDARIN-VOLT, Even camo and leopard print.
He may not play for the entire 2019-20 season, but Kevin Durant still dropped a new version of his signature shoe, the Zoom KD12. Featuring the latest innovation in Nike Zoom Air technology, these sneakers come in three colourways: Blue Gaze/Blue Tint/Photo Blue (pictured above), Black/White/Black, and University Red/White/Black.
You can even pick up a pair with the official “YouTube” colourway (pictured below), and there’s always the option to customize your own pair for just $230 CAD. These shoes are currently being worn by NBA stars including Jerome Robinson, Collin Sexton, Mikal Bridges, Jaren Jackson Jr., Royce O’Neale and Anfernee Simons.
The signature shoe of Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George, the PG 3 is quickly becoming one of the more popular shoes in the NBA. These shows are currently being worn by NBA stars including Josh Okogie, Jalen Brunson, Brad Wanamaker, Miles Bridges, De’Andre Hunter and Tyler Herro.
They come in three colourways: Obsidian/Wolf Grey/Chrome Yellow/Pink Blast (pictured above), White/Wolf Grey/Black (pictured below), and Black/Light Aqua/Black. And, of course, you can always splurge on a pair of customized PG 3s for $175 CAD.
Kyrie Irving’s signature shoe is easily one of the most popular and customizable shoes in the NBA. Players such as OG Anunoby, Jonathan Isaac, Bruce Brown, Jaxson Hayes, Ja Morant, Rodney Hood and Cam Reddish are currently rocking the Kyrie 5s on the court.
Kobe Bryant may have retired in 2016, but the Lakers legend’s influence on the NBA remains incredibly strong with his signature sneakers, the Kobe 4 Protro. This shoe, worn by countless stars throughout the league, come in an obscene amount of colourways: the Lakers-themed PURPLE/UNIVERSITY GOLD/WHITE edition is pictured above, but there are endless options for these versatile sneakers.
