Police say that the 29-year-old suspect, Travis Reinking, fatally shot two people outside of the restaurant at 3:23 a.m., before entering the Waffle House and continuing to shoot. Two more people were fatally injured inside the restaurant, and two victims were shot but survived. Reinking was stopped by a heroic customer, 29-year-old James Shaw Jr., who tackled him and wrestled away his semi-automatic weapon. The suspect fled, reportedly nude or only partially clothed.
This is the Waffle House hero, James Shaw Jr. He tackled the shooter and saved so many lives in the process. Thank you James. And thank you TriStar Southern Hills Medical Center for your wonderful doctors and nurses who quickly took care of his injuries. pic.twitter.com/kKORfI24G1

"Keep your doors locked, keep your eyes open," said Nashville Police representative Don Aaron. "If you see this individual-if you see a nude guy walking around this morning-call the police department immediately."
Aaron also said that "both federal and state law enforcement agencies have knowledge of Travis Reinking, due to previous interactions." No motive for the shooting is known, and the victims have not yet been publicly identified.
As a surgeon in Nashville, this Waffle House shooting is so tragic and infuriating because Tennessee state lawmakers have repeatedly refused to change the most lax laws on AR-15s in the nation. You don’t need a background check to buy one in a private transfer.
