“Shining Vale” Pays Homage to Classic Horror — from “The Exorcist” to “The Ring” — in Season 2 (Exclusive)

PEOPLE has the First Look at the nine horror classics-inspired posters for the Starz show's second season

Pat is back.

Four months and sixty-six shock treatments after hitting her husband Terry (Greg Kinnear) with an axe, Pat (Courteney Cox) finds herself released from a psychiatric hospital at the start of Shining Vale's second season, premiering Oct. 13 on Starz.

When Pat returns home, she discovers her husband doesn't remember her, and her new neighbor Ruth (Mira Sorvino) bears a striking resemblance to Rosemary (also played by Sorvino). Even worse, the Victorian mansion Pat's family moved into last season finally starts to reveal its secrets.

Jeff Astrof, Shining Vale's co-creator, executive producer and showrunner, promises the new season will continue the series' horror-comedy ways.

“The fun of Shining Vale is creating a world that exists at the nexus of character-based comedy and psychological horror," Astrof says. "Our goal was to never slip into spoof, but rather to have our characters, and hopefully our audience, experience true terror, but in a very funny way.”

To mark Shining Vale's return, Starz is releasing nine show posters inspired by a septet of horror classics — and PEOPLE has the exclusive first look!

'The House of the Devil'

What dark secrets will the Phelps family's mansion reveal this season? If this poster, honoring the 1983 horror mystery The House of the Devil offers any hints, it may be Pat, Terry and seemingly, Ruth, who get to the truth.

'The Exorcist'

The 1973 classic remains one of the scariest movies of all time, so it's no surprise Shining Vale pays tribute with an image of Gaynor (Gus Birney) suspended above her bed.

'Donnie Darko'

As an homage to the 2001 psychological thriller, Jake (Dylan Gage) is shown in a movie theater sharing popcorn with Frank the Rabbit, the time-traveling demonic-looking creature that haunts Jake Gyllenhaal's character in the film.

'Mommie Dearest'

The 1981 campy drama isn't a straight-up horror film, but it might as well be. In this stunning black-and-white shot, Joan (Judith Light) channels her inner Faye Dunaway, who played Joan Crawford in the movie.

'The Others'

Whether you consider the brooding 2001 horror thriller a classic or not, there's no denying Nicole Kidman's convincing performance as Grace, a mother pushed to the edge of her sanity. Kam (Merrin Dungey) emulates Kidman's fearful look here.

'The Ring'

One of the best English-language horror film adaptations remains the brooding 2002 movie, starring Naomi Watts. In this image, Pat (Cox) does her best impression of Samara Morgan, The Ring's frightening foe.

'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest'

The 1975 classic starring Jack Nicholson isn't necessarily a horror flick, but it is unsettling, at times. Rosemary (Sorvino) takes a lesson from the movie's monstrous Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher) in this particular shot.

'Cujo'

Dogs were long considered man's best friend — at least until Cujo premiered in theaters in 1983. Here, Roxy sits in for the notoriously rabid dog, which Stephen King originally made famous in his 1981 novel.

'The Shining'

A horror films send-up wouldn't be complete without honoring the 1980 drama starring Nicholson. In this creepy close-up, Terry (Kinnear) recreates The Shining's iconic shot of Nicholson's unhinged character, Jack, peering maniacally through a hole in the door.
