Shia LaBeouf Told His Dad Mel Gibson Would Play Him in ‘Honey Boy’ (Video)

As Shia LaBeouf’s new movie “Honey Boy” shows, the actor has a complicated relationship with his father. So to convince his dad to sign away his life rights for use in the movie, LaBeouf told a little white lie.

LaBeouf revealed to Jimmy Kimmel on Wednesday that he told his father that Mel Gibson would portray him in the film. Little did he know that LaBeouf himself would be playing his own dad. And LaBeouf added that his dad was not “too enthused” about the real plan.

“I lied to him and told him that Mel Gibson would be playing him,” LaBeouf said. “He signed the paperwork, then I got home, I sent him pictures, and I broke it to him. ‘Look, it’s not like that.’ True story.”

LaBeouf wrote the screenplay for “Honey Boy,” which opens this Friday, while he was in court ordered rehab after being arrested in Savannah, Georgia. The film is an autobiographical story about his life interacting with his dad as a child actor up through the time when he was actually arrested. Alma Har’el directs the film, and LaBeouf stars not as himself but as his father, while Noah Jupe and Lucas Hedges play LaBeouf at other stages in his life.

It turns out though that LaBeouf’s father has actually seen “Honey Boy,” but he couldn’t bring himself to ask him what he thought of it.

“I told him, listen, I don’t want to hear your review. I just want to watch you watch it,” LaBeouf said, setting up a web cam to capture his reaction to the film in real-time. “He’s big on Facebook. He’s got all these robot friends, all these Russian friends.”

LaBeouf’s full interview with Kimmel touches on how he still has a relationship with Officer Brian, the Savannah cop who arrested him, and that he still keeps in touch with Kanye West when it comes to fashion choices. His quotes about lying to his father begin at the 2:54 mark in the video above.
