Shelley Duvall Tells Dr. Phil ‘I Need Help’
Shelley Duvall was praised for her terrified performance in 1980’s The Shining, but in recent years, it appears her health has declined — both physically and mentally.
A promo clip from Dr. Phil shows an unrecognizable and disheveled-looking Duvall. She goes on to talk about her former Popeye co-star Robin Williams, saying: “I don’t think he’s dead … he’s shapeshifting.” She follows up by saying that she’s seen him.
But some are calling Dr. Phil exploitative. Vivian Kubrick, daughter of the late Shining director, Stanley Kubrick, tweeted:
My Letter to you @DrPhil
Re: Your exploitive use of Shelly Duvall is a form of LURID ENTERTAINMENT and is shameful. pic.twitter.com/4f6MRTzr0A— Vivian Kubrick (@ViKu1111) November 17, 2016
Kubrick also called for a boycott of the episode, which is set to air on Nov. 18.
This will mark a rare public appearance for the 67-year-old actress. Her most recent movie credit was in 2002’s Manna From Heaven, in which she played a supporting role.
