Beyond the Boys Club is a new podcast from journalist and radio host Anne Erickson of Audio Ink Radio. Spinning off from the interview column of the same name, the show highlights women and non-binary artists as they offer their perspectives on the music industry and discuss their personal experiences. Sharon den Adel of Dutch band Within Temptation knows that there’s power in music. After all, the band is one of the most popular symphonic metal outfits of all time, with fans that truly span the globe. When writing and recording Within Temptation’s latest album, Bleed Out, the singer and her bandmates decided to take a major lyrical step forward as they address some important global issues.
Due out on October 20th, Within Temptation’s new album sees the band addressing the war in Ukraine, global injustices, the plight of women fighting for their rights in Iran after the murder of Mahsa Amini, the complex issues around a woman’s right to choose, and more. Topics like these make den Adel the perfect guest for the debut episode of the Beyond the Boys Club podcast from the Consequence Podcast Network.
Joining host Anne Erickson, den Adel discusses all the ground covered in Bleed Out, her friendship with Amy Lee of Evanescence, and much more. Having been the singer of Within Temptation for more than a quarter century, she has plenty of wisdom to share in this interview.
“What you see is what you get, I think, and then all of a sudden if there’s just one person in that audience that thinks, ‘I’m going to do that as well — but I’m a woman, I don’t care, I’m just going to do it because I love it,’ that’s when you get change,” den Adel says of how rock and metal have been historically male dominated. “Because you need to see, it needs to be visible. And I think it was just men inspiring men; you just need one lady to fix it all and maybe just to mix it up and make other girls think, ‘Oh, this is cool. I’m going to do it, as well.'”
