Sharks' Dillon won't face discipline for hit on Auston Matthews

San Jose Sharks defenceman Brenden Dillon will avoid any supplementary discipline for a hit on Toronto Maple Leafs centre Auston Matthews, Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reports.

The league determined that Dillon wasn’t aiming for Matthews’ head.

Matthews was taken to the locker room in the second period shortly after getting hit by Dillon, and was initially upset that no penalty was called.

The 22-year-old returned for the start of the third period, however, and scored an insurance goal to seal a 4-1 victory. Here’s another view of Dillon’s hit on Matthews:

Matthews told reporters post-game that he’s feeling OK after the hit, which comes as welcome relief for the Maple Leafs who are already without captain John Tavares and winger Zach Hyman in the lineup due to injuries.
