Shark Week has begun and fans are angry: 'Most disgraceful start to Shark Week ever'

Discovery's much-beloved Shark Week kicked off Sunday night with the featured show Shark Trip: Eat. Prey. Chum. Unlike traditional Shark Week programming, however, this 2-hour show focused much more on comedic bits with celebrities Anthony Anderson, Adam Devine, Rob Riggle, Damon Wayans Jr. and Joel McHale than it did on sharks and science.

The programming for Shark Week has changed substantially since it first premiered in 1988. Originally, the content aimed to educate viewers and help with shark conservation.

Over the years, Discovery has experimented with various shark-related content, with frequent success. But this isn’t the first time fans have been overly disappointed by the programming.

In 2017, the network teased a swimming competition between a great while shark and Olympian Michael Phelps. Many fans were disappointed that the race relied on CGI animation and loose science. In fact, both Phelps and Discovery had to defend the show against major backlash.

This time, fans were upset because the show focused much more on comedic bits than anything else.

Despite not being that informative, the show definitely had funny moments. And in the end, Adam Devine did manage to tag a tiger shark with a C.A.T.S. cam, and technically that’s science.
