'Shape of Water' leads Critics’ Choice film nominations

Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” led the Broadcast Film Critics Assn.’s Critics’ Choice Movie Award nominations with 14 mentions, including best picture, best director, best actress (Sally Hawkins) and best sci-fi/horror film.

The film, which opened in limited release last weekend, was far and away the leader with “Call Me by Your Name,” “Dunkirk,” “Lady Bird” and “The Post” a distant second with eight nominations apiece. They are joined by “The Big Sick,” “Darkest Hour,” “The Florida Project,” “Get Out” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” in the best picture category.

“The Big Sick” scribe and star Kumail Nanjiani picked up two nominations himself, for best actor in a comedy and best adapted screenplay. But he was also nominated by the BFCA’s sister organization, the Broadcast Television Journalists Assn., for his work on HBO’s “Silicon Valey,” making him the overall nominations champ between the two groups. Other double-dipping BFCA nominees include “Lady Bird” writer-director Greta Gerwig, “The Disaster Artist” director and star James Franco, New York Film Critics supporting actress champ Tiffany Haddish (“Girls Trip”), “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” writer-director Martin McDonagh, and “Shape” writer-director Guillermo del Toro.

Last year’s BFCA best picture champ was “La La Land.”
