Created by Eric Warren Singer and Steve Lightfoot, Shantaram is an American-Australian drama thriller series based on the 2003 namesake novel by Gregory David Roberts. The plot revolves around Dale Conti, a former paramedic turned bank robber, who escapes from prison in Australia and travels to Bombay (now, Mumbai) under the alias Lindsay Ford. The more time he spends there, the more he immerses in the city and its people. Season 1 originally premiered between October 14, 2022, and December 16, 2022, and received a mixed to positive response, earning a 56% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Is there a Shantaram Season 2 release date?
There is no Shantaram Season 2 release date as Shantaram was canceled after season 1.
In December 2022, Apple canceled Shantaram. Season 1 finale served as the series finale as it aired after the cancellation announcement. In the past, there had been other attempts to adapt the book, with Johnny Depp and Joel Edgerton slated to portray the main character in different cinematic renditions, but they never came to fruition. The Apple project suffered multiple setbacks during production due to COVID-related restrictions and the departure of showrunner Eric Warren Singer.
Ultimately, Shantaram didn’t succeed in creating the level of buzz that other high-profile Apple shows generate, and that’s likely served as one of the main reasons for cancelation.
