Shannen Doherty weighs in on the Charmed feud: 'What's old is new'

Shannen Doherty is throwing in her support for the Charmed reboot amid an online feud between current series star Sarah Jeffery and original stars Rose McGowan and Holly Marie Combs.

Jeffery slammed both McGowan and Combs on Monday in response to a video they posted on social media in which McGowan said the reboot "sucks" while Combs laughed in the background. McGowan also said in the video that she's never seen the new show, which stars Jeffery, Melonie Diaz, and Madeleine Mantock as a new generation of magical siblings.

"What’s old is new… and I think it’s wonderful a new generation can connect with three strong, powerful women, not to mention the many jobs the show provides," Doherty tells EW exclusively.

Doherty, who costarred with Combs in the original Charmed and was replaced by McGowan (playing a new character) after three seasons, has backed the reboot since its early days. When the new show was announced, she wrote on social media, "I'm intrigued by the idea that a new generation might be comforted, inspired like you all were. Charmed helped us all in some way."

Jeffery previously expressed her appreciation for Doherty on Tuesday, sharing a photo of her on set meeting her dad.

"In other news, my dad met the lovely @DohertyShannen onset once whilst standing in," she said via Twitter. "He approached her saying his daughter was a new Charmed one (pre-covid!). He told me she was so kind, thrilled for us, and excited to take a picture. She sent her love."

Jeffery tweeted that she found it "sad and quite frankly pathetic" seeing "grown women behave this way" in response to McGowan and Combs' video. She also wrote, "It really doesn’t sit right with me that white women from the OG charmed consistently put down a new #Charmed with a POC cast.. you hate to see it..."

McGowan later responded, "I'm beyond glad any WOC has a well-paying job. Hell yes to that. I'm sure you're a great actress." She added that her "quibble" is "about execs & producers & WB network trading on years of my work & name in such a cynical & obvious way—a money grab to cash in on the Charmed name."

Combs also fired back on social media, writing, "That's some bulls---. And a lot of it. Clearly. People speaking, excuse me, typing, derogatory accusations of a person's character despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary because of a difference in opinions about a tv show is just plain wrong. And also personal gain honey."

Alyssa Milano, who also starred in the original Charmed, has weighed in on the reboot as well.

“I wish that they would have come to us and we would have been involved since the beginning,” Milano said in 2018. “But having said that, I do hope that it reaches the newer generation and impacts that generation the way ours was able to do for its generation.”
