Shamir had Charlotte Sometimes’ Sideways EP on repeat throughout high school, and it’s never once come out of heavy rotation. The simple honesty of the lyrics and the strong melodies gave him hope that he could find success as a performer someday. He loved that it wasn’t a groundbreaking project, but rather a solid example of the kind of songwriting and production that felt familiar to him.
On this episode of The Spark Parade, Shamir talks about the impact the project on him personally, as well as the similarities between the career of Charlotte Sometimes (aka Jessica Poland) and his own success. “We’ve all been spoon-fed this idea of what success is and what it looks like,” he said. “When you are at that level you can’t control it. There’s a bit more peace in being able to have a little success you can control.”
Shamir goes on to speak on his inspiration from Taylor Swift, how Poland’s vocals inspired his own, and more.
