'Shameless' Star Emmy Rossum Slams Oscars for Being 'Uncomfortable' with Sex and Lacking Female Representation
The Academy Awards or "Oscars" nominations came out Monday morning and while most nominees expressed their gratitude, "Shameless" star Emmy Rossum had a few not-so-nice things to say about the academy's picks.
Rossum took to Twitter to express her frustrations, bashing the academy's voters for being "uncomfortable with women displaying confidence in their sexual selves" and not including talented and deserving females in the "best director" category.
In her tweets, Rossum specifically mentioned female director Alma Har'el and her hard work on the drama film "Honey Boy."

Her comments about sex relate to Jennifer Lopez's role in "Hustlers."
In full, Emmy's tweet about the academy's uncomfortableness with sexual characters reads:
"Voters are uncomfortable with women displaying confidence in their sexual selves. This is shame-based and bullshit. It takes guts and smarts and backbone and TALENT to deliver the performance that Lopez did. That is all."
For context, Lopez played a troubled stripper in the movie "Hustlers" who made her living turning tricks and robbing rich men.
However, not all fans on Twitter agreed Lopez's stripper performance was deserving of a nomination.
"I did not like the movie...too much sex and violence driving our society already anyway," one user wrote. Another chimed in, "There is no way JLO deserved an Oscar nom for Hustlers. I will die on this hill haha."
Her tweets also reference Lupita Nyong'o.
Among the tweets in her Monday rant, Emmy mentioned "Us" actress Lupita Nyong'o, who was also notably snubbed by the Oscars nominations.
"Lupita deserved to be recognized for US. The movement and THE VOICE TEXTURE ALONE give her the nomination in my mind. She is such a specific actress, no choice is general, nothing is an accident, each moment is crafted and yet still supple and with breath."
In a second tweet, Rossum followed up with "BUT horror (and comedy) are never considered as equal to drama. That has also gotta change."
Recent criticism revamps #OscarsSoWhite.
While Emmy Rossum had a lot to say on Twitter. She is far from the only one to express her issues with the Oscars diversity and inclusion in recent years.
The hashtag "OscarsSoWhite" was coined in 2015 to describe the lack of inclusion. With the drop of the latest nominations, the old hashtag is resurfacing.
Twitter users posting under the hashtag didn't hold back, calling the Oscars "racist" for ignoring the top talent of non-white women. Among the top complaints, users expressed their disgust that only one black actor was nominated for 2020.
This is the second drama story to stem from the 2020 Academy Awards.
The Oscars made headlines before even releasing this year's nominations because they decided to run the show without a host for 2020.
This decision comes after their embarrassing 2019 upset when Kevin Hart stepped back from the hosting position after the Academy attempted to force an apology for old homophobic tweets Hart sent out.
After running without a host for a year, the Academy told USA Today they were happy with the outcome and are not seeking out a leader for this year's show.
