'Shameless' Star Cameron Monaghan Teases 'Really Fun' Season

A lot of people scratched their heads when Showtime switched Shameless from the Emmy drama categories to comedy, but star Cameron Monaghan promises the change will be reflected in the upcoming season.

In an interview with Yahoo TV, Monaghan, who plays gay teen Ian Gallagher, revealed that the fifth season will be set during summertime. Last we saw the Gallaghers, father Frank (William H. Macy) had received a life-saving liver transplant, Fiona (Emmy Rossum) was rebuilding her life after a stint in prison, and Ian had suffered a bipolar breakdown.

It was all very dark stuff, but when the series returns in 2015, we can expect more laughs.

The Gallaghers will be “back on the streets with a lot of energy,” Monaghan told us. “It’s a little bit more comedically driven after that last really dark season that we had. It’s really fun.”

Monaghan is currently promoting his new movie, The Giver, which he appears in opposite Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgard, and Odeya Rush.

The movie is filled with amazing actors, but Monaghan already gets to work with one on the Shameless set — Macy. Of the veteran actor’s recent Emmy nomination, Monaghan said, “About damn time!”

The new season of Shameless begins in 2015.
