After over a decade of marriage, Steve Howey and Sarah Shahi are going their separate ways.

PEOPLE can confirm that former L Word and Person of Interest star Shahi filed for divorce from the Shameless actor on May 4 in Los Angeles Superior Court.

The exes share son William Wolf, 10, and twins Violet Moon and Knox Blue, 5.

"After much thought and consideration, we have decided to end our marriage," Howey, 42, and Shahi, 40, said in a joint statement to PEOPLE on Monday. "We are so grateful for the past 10 years together and proud of our children that we've raised."

"As we enter into this new phase of our lives, our priority will remain co-parenting our children with so much love, mutual respect and friendship," they continued. "And though our relationship is changing, we are committed to continuing our lives as a loving family."

Shahi and Howey, who has played Kevin Ball on Shameless since 2011, met on the set of Reba in 2004. They wed in 2009 in Las Vegas.

Speaking to PEOPLE in 2016, the stars reflected on how their lives changed after welcoming the twins.

"It is not easy, but all three are beautiful babies," Howey said. "We're a very close-knit family, just bigger."

The actor said parenting their brood can get "overwhelming," but he added that the two worked "really hard" to schedule workout time together.

"Or we'll run to the kitchen and do a tequila shot really fast — just do something together," he said. "Then it's right back into the playroom or changing a diaper."

Us Weekly first reported the news of the split.
