Shakira isn’t looking back after her split from ex-partner Gerard Piqué, it’s onward and upward for her. The 47-year-old singer even has a sense of humor about her breakup because it has fueled her latest album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran, which translates to “women no longer cry.”

“It’s men’s turn now. For too long we have been sent to cry with a script in our hands and without an end just because we are women. We have to conceal our pain in front of our kids, in front of society,” Shakira explained during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. “We have to heal in a certain way. And I don’t think anyone is supposed to tell us how to heal. No one is supposed to tell a She-wolf how to lick her wounds.”

Fallon was curious as to why Shakira waited seven years to put out a full studio album even though she released a few singles along the way. The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer was brutally honest in her response. “I’ve been putting out music here and there, but it was really hard for me to put together a body of work,” Shakira admitted. “I didn’t have time. It was the husband factor. Now I’m husbandless. Yeah, the husband was dragging me down. Now I’m free. Now I can actually work.” Her response was met with applause from the audience and a belly laugh from Fallon.

The former couple began dating in 2010 and share two sons, Milan, 11, and Sasha, 9, together. Despite referring to Piqué as her “husband,” the duo never married, and their relationship came to a screeching halt in 2022. The Spanish soccer player allegedly cheated on Shakira with his now-girlfriend Clara Chia Marti. Shakira described how excruciating that time was for her because she was also dealing with her father’s health issues. “Everything happened at once,” she explained to People en Español. “My home was falling apart. I was finding out through the press that I had been betrayed while my dad was in the ICU.”

However, there’s nothing better than a musician channeling their pain through music, and that’s exactly what Shakira did. In her 2023 single, “BZRP Music Session #53,” her lyrics were quite telling. “I wish you good luck with my supposed replacement / I don’t even know what happened to you.” Shakira is blossoming in her next chapter.
