Bittersweet goodbyes are in order for fans of FX’s What We Do in the Shadows. The popular vampire mockumentary series will come to an end with its sixth season, which is set to begin production in January, according to Vulture.

What We Do in the Shadows first premiered in 2019 with Paul Simms as showrunner. It was created by Jermaine Clement, who wrote the 2014 film of the same name alongside Taika Waititi. The franchise’s first spin-off, Wellington Paranormal, ran for four seasons between 2018 and 2022, but the vampire hijinks of the What We Do in the Shadows series was the big winner.

The series has been nominated for 21 Emmy Awards, including in the Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series and Outstanding Comedy Series categories. The show earned its first win in 2022 for Outstanding Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes. It’s also currently up for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 2024 GLAAD Media Awards.

Across its five seasons, What We Do in the Shadows has featured guest appearances from Tilda Swinton, Wesley Snipes, Craig Robinson, Mark Hamil, Fred Armisen, Sofia Coppola, Hannibal Buress, Patton Oswalt, and more.

Over the years, the series creators have managed to keep viewers on their toes. After Colin, one of the show’s three vampire roommates, was killed off at the end of season three, he was replaced with Baby Colin — a baby with Mark Proksch’s head. Writers had felt as though they had pushed the adult version of the character to his limit, and that was their solution to keep the ball rolling. Plus, they had a fairly open field of play when it came to the scenarios that created for these characters to exist within.

“When we work on scripts, there are always jokes where we say, ‘The vampires wouldn’t know that,'” Simms told Rolling Stone last year. “But we broke those rules all the time, and there are always exceptions that are just too hard to resist.”
