The Shadow and Bone cast is remembering their time on the fantasy series following Netflix’s cancellation after two seasons.

On Friday, Freddy Carter, who played Crows leader Kaz Brekker, wrote on Instagram that “maybe at some point I’ll have the right words to express the immense gratitude I feel to everyone who put their whole hearts into making, watching and supporting Shadow and Bone. Until then, I’ll just say, thank you.”

Inej portrayer Amita Suman shared that she was “lost for words” and called the Crows’ stealthy spy “one of my favorite characters I will have the honor of playing.”

“Not just because she has taught me to be a better person, opened so many doors, but also because she has given me in abundance, a found family, unforgettable memories, laughter lines, the honor of working alongside a cast and crew I looked forward to seeing everyday,” the actress explained. “She has given me the best fandom a girl from the slums didn’t even dream of. I don’t know what I did to deserve the sheer amount of love, know that in my prayers. I send thanks and a smile every day for you, everyone involved and the reasons above.”

This comes after Ben Barnes — who also starred as General Kirigan aka The Darkling — took to Instagram on Thursday to express his thoughts about the show’s untimely ending.

“I was so excited to watch the brilliant, beautiful humans I love so much who made Shadow and Bone take this world, their characters and this story onwards,” he wrote. “This part of the journey is sorrowful and I am so proud to have been a part of it.”

Barnes also shared behind-the-scenes tidbits, including video of him rehearsing the various sounds that made the shadowy monsters known as nichevo’ya so fearsome on screen.

Jessie Mei Li, who led the ensemble as the Sun Summoner Alina Starkov, posted footage of her screen test for the role in 2019 with the caption, “Shadow and Bone has come to an end. My first big job and I will never forget it. Walking away now towards exciting new horizons with some friends for life! Thanks for watching, Grishaverse.”

Her message was accompanied by Instagram Stories snippets with co-stars Barnes and Archie Renaux (who played Alina’s best friend Mal), which you can watch here and here.

In a bittersweet sendoff on X (formerly Twitter), Renaux wrote that he “loved working on the show and loved working with everyone involved,” describing his Shadow and Bone experience as a “truly a special time in my life.” While thanking fans for their support, he also noted that he was “sorry to all our writers that won’t be able to share the next chapter in the story.”

As previously reported, Shadow and Bone was among the five shows Netflix cancelled on Wednesday, which also included the Miss Benny/Kim Cattrall dramedy Glamorous and animated series Agent Elvis, Farzar and Captain Fall.

Book author Leigh Bardugo confirmed that the planned Six of Crows spinoff — for which the scripts had already been written — was also scrapped.

Additional cast reactions include Kit Young, who played the Crows’ charismatic gunslinger Jesper, as well as Season 2 newcomers Lewis Tan and Jack Wolfe, who portrayed Heartrender Tolya Yul-Bataar and book favorite Wylan, respectively.
