Limited no more? ? Shōgun, FX’s remake of the 1980 miniseries and one of the best television shows of 2024 so far, will potentially return for two more seasons.

The show — like its TV predecessor, also based on the James Clavell novel — was originally supposed to be a limited series. However, over the course of 10 episodes, Shōgun became FX’s most-watched show ever when paired with its Hulu streaming release, opening the door for a return to 16th century Japan.

Word of Shōgun’s changing future first leaked earlier this month when FX was confronted with whether to submit the acclaimed show in Emmy’s limited series or ongoing drama categories, the Hollywood Reporter writes, adding that the network opted for ongoing.

Hiroyuki Sanada, who stars as Lord Yoshii Toranaga on Shōgun, then secured an “if-come” deal from FX that ensured his participation in future seasons of the series if they were to happen.

“We’ve been talking about how the story can continue since we started shooting, but who knows,” Sanada said in an interview that followed the then-limited series’ finale earlier this month.

While Seasons 2 and 3 haven’t officially been green-lit, Shōgun is trending in that direction as a writer’s room has already been assembled, with co-creators, exec producers, and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo also returning. FX is also in league with the estate of the late author Clavell, as future seasons would include his characters while also extending beyond his 1975 novel.

FX and Hulu did not reveal what other Season One cast members might join Sanada in future seasons.
