SFFILM Festival kicks off 67th year

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The 2024 San Francisco International Film Festival is underway this week. This marks the 67th year of the festival, featuring more than 80 films between Wednesday and Sunday night.

Seven of the films featured this year are from Bay Area filmmakers, including recent Oscar nominee Sean Wong. His newest film “DiDi” kicked things off Wednesday night. From documentaries to feature films, this year’s festival features movies from 40 different countries.

The Director of Programming, Jessie Fairbanks, says this year’s selections feature many filmmakers who pulled stories from their own lives and real experiences. There are also several filmmakers who have been a part of SFFILM since early in their careers.

“One of the filmmakers this year, Jazmine Renee Jones, was a part of our youth competition several years ago. Her producer went through our resident development program. And now, they’re screening their film ‘Seeking Mavis Beacon’ at the festival; which was largely filmed in the East Bay! So the thematic is really the powerhouse creative collective that is the Bay Area,” Fairbanks said.

Screenings for “‘Seeking Mavis Beacon”‘ will take place this Friday in Berkeley and Saturday in San Francisco.

The festival will close out Sunday with the film “Thelma,” featuring 93-year-old actress June Squibb doing her own stunts.

All details and tickets to screenings can be purchased online.
