After its first season premiered roughly a year ago, "Sex Education" quickly became one of the most popular shows on Netflix. While there's no word on whether the show will be back for a third season yet, that's not entirely out of the ordinary.
After the first season premiered in January of 2019, the show wasn't renewed for a second season until a month later. So, if there is a third season, it would be reasonable to expect it in January 2021.
"Sex Education" follows a young boy whose mother is a sex therapist. He decides to follow in her footsteps and help his classmates with their sexual hangups. The first season debuted to great reviews, and it seemed to be a hit with audiences as well.
After the first season debuted, Deadline reported that more than 40 million people had watched the show in the weeks since it aired. That means that they watched at least 70 percent of each episode.
As for what season 2 has in store, the trailer for the second season suggests that Otis will be forced to confront his mother's life as a sex therapist, and will also give us plenty of the awkwardness that defined the first season.
"As much as [Otis] is in his own head all the time, this season gives it a bit more perspective on the wider scope of things," star Asa Butterfield told Teen Vogue during a visit to the set.
This season will also see the introduction of some new characters, including a love interest for Otis's best friend Eric. For Eric, love will come in the form a new, hot French student named Rahim, although he won't be the only person vying for Eric's attention.
Meanwhile, Maeve, the girl Otis is in love with, is taking possession of her own story in the second season. She and Otis are on the outs, but that may ultimately be for the best.
"[Maeve is] just owning her narrative in season two and I'm just really happy for her," actress Emma Mackey told Teen Vogue. "I remember all of the people asking, 'What do you hope for Maeve in Season 2?' I was like, 'I just hope she signs up the Aptitude Scheme and spends the time with Aimee.' That's exactly what she's doing."
It seems like the show's second season will be just as hilarious, moving, and horny as the first, and we can't wait to see what's in store.
