For all the complaints about Hollywood’s reliance on existing intellectual property, film spin-offs are surprisingly rare. Every summer brings its share of sequels and reboots, but new films starring characters from other films are still largely-uncharted territory.
Last week’s release of “Fast and Furious” spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw” resulted in solid box office returns and plenty of critical love for a spin-off actually done well. But while we’ve yet to see a film that reaches the heights of a television take like, oh, “Frasier,” there are still plenty of spin-offs worth watching.
