The Late Night host on Monday took the national news media to task for willing to overlook the “racist, bigoted, unhinged rhetoric” exhibited throughout the president-elect’s campaign.

“Many in the media are doing everything they can to delude themselves and the nation into thinking that this is a normal situation — that Trump’s behavior and campaign promises don’t pose a unique threat to American principles and norms,” he said. Flummoxed by the decision to “talk about giving him a fresh start like he was on a diet and ate a cupcake,” Meyers admonished the free press for “trying to pretend that Trump’s incoming presidency isn’t a threat to our institutions.”

Later, Meyers argued that, even if Trump did deserve a fresh start, he’d already blown it by hiring Breitbart News‘ Steve Bannon, “a white nationalist and an anti-semite,” as his chief strategist.
