Serena Williams Had the Best Response to That Meghan Markle Wimbledon Drama

Honestly, the life of Meghan Markle sounds exhausting. Last week, a simple attempt to support friend Serena Williams at Wimbledon turned into an onslaught of critique regarding the Duchess’s choice to wear jeans and have additional security. At a Wimbledon conference, Williams reacted to Meghan’s Wimbledon dress code violation and photo blackout requests — with no reaction at all. Williams refuses to read negative press about her friend and had been previously unaware that there was any controversy, and she wasn’t going to bite at anyone’s request for drama.

When asked by a reporter whether she hopes Meghan will attend the Wimbledon final and “ignore all that negative media,” Williams revealed that the existence of negative media was a surprise to her. “I didn’t know there was negative media out there,” she said. “Any time I see her name attached to anything, I don’t read it.” As to whether she’d like Meghan at the finals, Williams gave a neutral response there too: “She couldn’t be a better friend to me. Low moments, high moments, she’s always there, and that’s all I want to be to her.”

Given that Meghan didn’t violate dress code at all (those complaining thought she had been sitting in the royal box, which mandates formal attire), we’re glad Williams didn’t lose any sleep over it. And complaints about Meghan’s request for privacy are even less credible: the Duchess has fans peering into her home trying to get a glimpse of her 2-month-old baby. If she’d like a hair more privacy in any aspect of her life, we’ll allow it.

All in all, it sounds like Williams and Meghan have a strong friendship filled with mutual support. And as two women in the spotlight, they’ve learned to take media backlash with a grain of salt — or, you know, disregard it entirely.
