Boca Raton’s loss, however temporary, is West Palm Beach’s gain.

Seraphic Fire, the Grammy-nominated concert choir based in Miami, will perform two of its season's concerts at the Kravis Center in West Palm Beach over the next two months, the group announced last week.

The 13-member choir, which features professional singer-scholars from around the country, makes its regular Palm Beach County appearances at St. Gregory’s Episcopal Church in Boca Raton, but that church next door to Mizner Park is undergoing renovations.

Founded 21 years ago by Patrick Dupré Quigley, Seraphic Fire offers one of the rarest and highest-quality concertgoing experiences in South Florida. Audiences can hear a group that not only regularly performs works of Renaissance polyphony but also offers wide-ranging programs of contemporary music, often organized thematically: This season includes “In Her Own Voice,” a concert in January of music by women composers, and “Mid-Century Modern,” a program of pieces in April featuring music from the mid-20th century.

At the Kravis, Seraphic Fire will be joined in November by a chamber orchestra for a concert of scenes from "Castor et Pollux," a 1737 opera by the French Baroque master Jean-Philippe Rameau. The opera draws on the myth of the twins Castor and Pollux, one (Castor) mortal, and the other (Pollux) immortal. When Castor dies, Pollux asks Zeus to restore Castor to life so they can both be immortal.

The concert, titled “Gods and Mortals,” opens with a motet by another French Baroque composer, Jean-Joseph de Mondonville. The concert is set for 4 p.m. Nov. 5 at the Rinker Playhouse.

One of the most popular of Seraphic Fire’s concerts is its annual Christmas program, and this December, the group will perform it at the Rinker Playhouse. The seasonal songs include venerable pieces of Renaissance writing such as Tomás Luis de Victoria’s "O Magnum Mysterium," medieval songs (“There Is No Rose of Such Virtue”) and modern-era carols including Elizabeth Poston’s “Jesus Christ the Apple Tree,” which is always an audience favorite.

The concert, called “A Seraphic Fire Christmas,” also doubles as a celebration to mark the release of the group’s newest album of Christmas music. The concert is planned for 7 p.m. Dec. 12, in the Rinker Playhouse.

Tickets start at $45 for the Rameau concert, and $50 for the Christmas event. For more information, visit kravis.org or seraphicfire.org.
