Sept. 11: 6 events around Louisville where you can honor, remember the fallen

This is the 22nd anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. Here are five events taking place where you can honor and remember the fallen.

Cathedral of the Assumption Blue Mass

WHAT: In honor of local first responders and those killed in the line of duty. Rev. Shelton J. Fabre, D.D., Archbishop of Louisville, will preside over the annual ‘Blue Mass.’ Representatives from the Louisville Metro Police Department, Louisville Fire Department, Louisville Emergency Medical Services and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will give thanks for the work of current and former first responders and honor those who lost their lives in the line of duty. Open to all faiths.

Louisville Bats vs St. Paul Saints

WHAT: First Responders Day at Slugger Field, with firefighters, emergency medical services and local officers. Also Kids Day.

Vintage Fire Museum 9/11 Memorial

WHAT: The annual event honors all those who lost their lives in the Twin Towers attack of Sept. 11, 2001. This year’s memorial will include a special display on the 9-11 event, an honor guard, a large flag raised high between two ladder trucks, a short address, prayer, a period of silence, and a bell ceremony.

WHERE: 706 Spring St., Jeffersonville, Indiana

WHEN: Sept. 10, 3 p.m

Active Heroes – A Day of Service

WHAT: Area businesses including Texas Roadhouse Outreach, Humana Salute NRG, Rogers Group, Terry Gollar Trucking and others will spend the day improving the grounds and buildings at Active Heroes Retreat center used by military service members, their families, and the community.

WHERE: Active Heroes Retreat, 1022 Ridgeview Drive ShepherdsvilleWHEN: Sept. 11, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

WHAT: In honor of those who lost their lives and those impacted by the events on Sept. 11, 2001, Mission BBQ is offering a free sandwich to all active and retired first responders Sept. 11. There will be multiple first responder vehicles on displays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at noon a uniformed first responder will sing the National Anthem.

9/11 Remembrance Ceremony

WHAT: The Jeffersontown Fire/EMT Department and the Jeffersontown Police Department will have a special ceremony held to recognize the bravery and sacrifice of first responders on Sept. 11, 2001. The ceremony Includes an open prayer by Jeffersontown Police Chaplain Tom Dillard; vocalist Debbie Robbins; acknowledgement of the time when each hijacked plane crashed; Jeffersontown Mayor Carol Pike, Jeffersontown Fire Department Chief Sean Dreisbach and Jeffersontown Police Department Chief Rick Sanders will place a wreath at the Remembrance Plaza and closing prayer by Jeffersontown Fire Department Chaplain Kris Billitert.
