With as many singers as Montgomery has had on TV competitions like "American Idol" in recent years, it's about time we had a major push here to find hidden musical gems and give them a real chance to shine nationally.

"'American Idol' actually contacted us to see if we'd be willing to do this," said Randy Stephenson, the Alabama National Fair's executive director.

Now through Aug. 21, the "American Idol Audition Contest" is accepting 90-second videos of singing auditions. From that, up to 48 contestants will be picked to perform live during the Alabama National Fair, Oct. 6-15.

"We'll get our contestants out here and let them battle it out during the fair," Stephenson said.

As they're battling, genuine "American Idol" star Lady K will be watching. The Montgomery native and finalist from season 20 will be one of the judges. Along with the overall talent, Lady K said she'll be watching for big moments, wardrobe, stage presence and more.

"Basically, star qualities is what I'm going to be looking for," she said. "How is this contestant different from the rest? Did they have a good song selection? How is their energy? Is the audience participating or vibing with the person on stage? Nothing superficial, just all the things that make up a good performance."

Does it feel odd for Lady K to be on the other end of a singing competition as a judge? Not really. She's actually judged a few other events since her time on "Idol," and enjoys being a guide and mentor.

"I like it because I've been in the other position (as a performer)," she said. "I can understand the nerves and the anxiety. Despite those things, you can still see the talent."

Those selected from the video submissions to perform at the fair will do so over four different days and nights, Stephenson said. That'll happen on a Monday, Thursday and Saturday. The finals will happen on the last Sunday of the fair, and that also brings a special performance from Lady K. Along with singing on her own, she's bringing the contestants together with her for a finale.

"I will be doing my 'Time Of Your Life' song with the contestants," she said.

From the fair performers, one winner and three runners up will be awarded a private VIP audition on Zoom with an "American Idol" executive producer.

"They did this in West Virginia last year, and actually three of their contestants made it to California," Stephenson said.

To be eligible, singers must have been born between June 2, 1994, and Feb. 13, 2009. All minors must have consent and be escorted by a parent or legal guardian. This contest is open to legal U.S. residents.

This contest is being presented by the fair, WAKA News and Bluewater Broadcasting.

Along with judging and singing, Lady K said she'll have another special role at the Alabama National Fair that's a secret for now. What she can reveal is that it's a thrilling adventure that goes even beyond her love for wild rides and fair foods.

Music and more on the outdoor stage

Along with all the "American Idol" hopefuls, the Alabama National Fair already has several music acts scheduled to perform: Ginuwine, JJ Weeks, youth symphony, gospel music, Steel Cu'Zn, and "The Voice" teen finalist Ryley Tate Wilson of Montgomery. The K-Pop competition is returning as well.

All music events are free with fair admission.

Taste of the Fair

Just so your taste buds don't get jealous over all the upcoming music your ears get, Stephenson said something new they have planned for this year's Alabama National Fair is a Taste of the Fair. This is happening at the fairgrounds on Oct. 5, the Thursday before the fair officially opens.

"It's a fundraiser for cancer wellness," Stephenson said.

Guests will get to sample some of the fair foods, and Common Bond brews will be available also, Stephenson said.

Lady K said she didn't get to enjoy fair foods until she was older. Now, she loves them.

"The fair only comes around once a year," Lady K said. "I think you should just indulge."
