Selena Gomez Says Body-Shamers 'Messed Her Up' After She Gained Weight Following Lupus Diagnosis

Selena Gomez is getting candid about her health issues and experiencing the side effects of her medication all while in the public eye. The "Lose You to Love Me" singer, who was diagnosed with Lupus and forced to get a kidney transplant in 2017, recently opened up about her struggles on her best friend Raquelle Stevens’ video podcast "Giving Back Generation." Revealing she put on weight due to her medication, Gomez claimed her so-called fans started "attacking" her for it and "that really messed me up for a bit." Saying she first noticed the body-shaming on social media, the star told Stevens, “I have lupus and deal with kidney issues and high blood pressure, so I deal with a lot of health issues, and for me that’s when I really started noticing more of the body image stuff."

Selena Gets Real:

Gomez explained that her weight often functions up and down due to the combination of her lupus, the medication she takes daily and other various health factors. “It’s the medication I have to take for the rest of my life — it depends on even the month, to be honest,” the singer stated about her weight fluctuation. “So for me, I really noticed when people started attacking me for that. And in reality, that’s just my truth. I fluctuate. It depends what’s happening in my life," she said. Gomez added that all the negative comments on her social media about her fluctuating weight didn't help her emotional health. “That got to me big time,” she said of the negative attention. “That really messed me up for a bit.”

However, Selena Gomez also stated she's “very happy with living my life” and doesn't spend too much time on social media anymore. The singer has gone on breaks from her social media in the past and has even said that her team runs her accounts. “I don’t care to expose myself to everyone and hear what they have to say about it,” she said. Interestingly enough, Gomez celebrated her first No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart just days ago for her vulnerable song, "Lose You To Love Me." As The Blast reported, the lyrics made fans assume she was discussing her on-again, off-again relationship with now-married Justin Bieber and not all fans liked it. Some critiqued her for still being caught up in her past. It even caused a stir with his wife, Hailey Bieber, who fans thought was slamming Gomez for the lyrics, but the ladies have both come out showing support for each other.

Selena Gomez expressed her gratitude on social media but had a warning for her followers by telling them she will not stand for any woman tearing another woman down. Hailey followed that up by liking a post on social media of Gomez and her closest friends celebrating the song's success. Gomez, who dated Bieber on and off for nearly 10 years, was linked to the singer just months before he married Hailey in a courthouse wedding.
