Preppy fashion dominated the fall season, with plaid patterns, pleated skirts, neutral tones, and loafers reigning supreme throughout the autumn months. And while it may officially be spring now, preppy style does not appear to going anywhere, especially if Selena Gomez has anything to say about it. On Friday, she delivered a 101 on how to imbue your fall staples with springtime flair.

The Rare Beauty founder was spotted strolling through New York City’s TriBeCa neighborhood looking effortlessly stylish. She braved the 60-degree temps and cloudy weather in an oversize black leather jacket with a shearling-lined collar, lapels, and cuffs, paired with brown, cream, and blue plaid trousers and merlot-red lace-up combat boots. She livened up the chic outfit with a pop of vibrant daisy yellow in the form of a long-sleeved boat-neck shirt.

Although only hints of the top were visible from under her outerwear, the cheery hue was so bright, it was enough to evoke the vibe of a joyful sunny day. Gomez finished everything off with a capacious black leather tote bag and oversize gold hoops. She appeared to be wearing minimal makeup and wore her chestnut locks down in loose waves with a middle part.

Yellow has become the color of the spring, and the Only Murders in the Building star appears to be ahead of the curve with the trend, as three weeks ago celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik posted a photo of Gomez’s fresh butter-yellow manicure. Previously most commonly associated with Easter, the shade is evidently here for the long haul, as other celebrities, including Emily Ratajkowski, have also embraced the hue.

Gomez’s pops of color are a contrast to the monochromatic black ensembles she has otherwise been favoring as of late. Earlier this week, she exuded boss energy in a sweeping black faux-leather trench coat over a black top, breezy black trousers, and pointy black leather boots. Last month, she embodied romance in a black midi dress that featured a pencil skirt, long sleeves, and an off-the-shoulder design lined with satin bows, paired with transparent black tights and strappy pointed-toe pumps.
