Selena Gomez has been called out by fans of Chris Brown for scrunching up her face upon mention of the R&B star’s name during the 2023 MTV VMAs.

During the announcement of nominations for Best R&B Video, Brown’s name was mentioned as a featured artist on Chlöe’s single “How Does It Feel,” to which Gomez immediately frowned. While her reaction initially went undetected, footage from the show that hit the net soon after clearly showed the singer’s look of disapproval.

Fans of Breezy didn’t take too kindly to the subtle shade, taking to social media to call out the Only Murders in the Building actress.

“Nobody cares about her! Chris is winning that’s what people hate,” wrote one critic within TNT’s comment section, with a Twitter observer adding, “what do you have against @chrisbrown What do you look at in that contemptuous way when they mention it? you are one of those hidden haters WOKE? Because let me tell you that he is more of an artist than you in every way. He is better than you in everything.”

Gomez has since addressed the public’s reaction, taking to her Instagram Stories to address those who “dragged” her.

“I will never be a meme again. I’d rather sit still than be dragged for being myself. Much Love,” she wrote.

While Gomez was certainly met with backlash from Chris Brown fans, others came to her defense, arguing the ridiculousness of policing someone’s facial expressions and personal opinion.

“She can’t have a facial expression? On HER face? Omg,” wrote one observer within TNT‘s comment section, with another adding, “It’s not that serious. She doesn’t have to like everyone & we all make that face @ someone.”

Another supporter of Gomez added, “No way y’all expect everyone to support Chris Brown after everything he’s done, like he’s a good artist but no one has to like him.”
