Selena Gomez has revealed her new single, “Single Soon.” Watch its accompanying music video below.

Produced by hitmakers benny blanco and Cashmere Cat, the track is meant to hold over fans while she continues to work on the upcoming follow-up to her 2020 album, Rare. “Y’all have been asking for new music for a while,” Gomez wrote in a social media statement. “Since I’m not quite done with SG3, I wanted to put out a fun little song I wrote a while back that’s perfect for the end of summer.”

With a driving beat augmented by an ’80s-esque bed of synths, “Single Soon” really is a going-out anthem. Ditching the past and picking out the best outfit for the open possibilities of the future, Gomez sings that, though she can be “high maintenance,” she’s worthy of love, even if she’s in no hurry to find it. This past June, it appears she was looking for it at a soccer match, where she foreshadowed “Single Soon” by shouting at some of the players: “I’m single! I’m just a little high maintenance, but I’ll love you so much!” She shared a video of the moment to TikTok, with the caption “the struggle, man.”

Earlier this year, Gomez told Vanity Fair that her new music is about freedom. “Freedom from relationships, freedom from the darkness,” she said. “If I had my way, I would probably write ballads my whole life, but I want to produce music that will make people smile. The music I’m doing right now is about real things that I’m walking through. It’s really powerful, strong, very pop.”

Gomez is currently starring as Mabel in Hulu’s mystery dramedy series Only Murders in the Building alongside Martin Short and Steve Martin. Season 3 features prominent roles from Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep, the latter of whom performed the original song “Look for the Light” in a recent episode. In 2021, Gomez released her Revelación EP, her first project written almost entirely in Spanish. Last year, she dropped the emotional single “My Mind & Me” to accompany her Apple TV+ documentary of the same name.
