Sorry “Girlfriends” fans, it’s time to move on and let go.

For years we’ve been demanding a revival of the popular comedy, and the series’ stars have been on board to return. However, one of them is admitting the sad reality that none of us want to talk about.

Tracee Ellis Ross, who played Joan during the show’s eight season run, recently revealed the truth about whether a “Girlfriends” reunion will ever actually happen.

“The cast has always wanted to do it, but I’ll be honest with you, the ship has sailed,” she told VIBE. “I don’t think it’s ever going to happen. I think it would be a miracle.”

In June 2023, Persia White confirmed that the cast wants to get back together, telling The Root that since the rights are owned by creator Mara Brock Akil and the studio, it’s “complicated. Ross agrees, but also admits that now that the actresses are in “different places” it would be difficult to make a reunion happen.

“We have a thread of me and the girls and we text all the time; we talk about it, but I think we’re all at different places in our lives and our careers now,” Ross said. “I think there was a point 10 years ago when they came on ‘Black-ish’ and we were all game, but we couldn’t get the powers that be to get on board.”

“We’ve tried numerous times as a cast to make it happen, but unfortunately, we don’t own the rights to the show,” she continued. “We are not the producers. We are not Mara Brock Akil, CBS Paramount, or whoever the people are that own the show. Golden [Brooks], Persia, Jill [Marie Jones], Reggie [Hayes], and I have been game; we’ve all talked about it—but I genuinely don’t think it’s ever going to happen at this point.”

It’s not just the idea that “Girlfriends” was a groundbreaking series that was ahead of its time...it’s that it was so unceremoniously canceled, offering fans no closure after following these characters for eight seasons. For fans, there’s a never ending demand for more because we feel like there wasn’t a real finale.

Ross isn’t telling us anything we didn’t already know. But that doesn’t make it any easier to get past. No matter how painful it is, sometimes you just have to let go and move on.

In this case, at least we can still binge our favorite episodes on Netflix.
