Tom Holland is branching out.

The 24-year-old actor stars in the upcoming crime-drama film Cherry based on the 2018 book of the same name by Nico Walker, in which he plays a young Army medic with post-traumatic stress disorder who starts robbing banks to fund his addiction to opioids.

In a teaser that dropped Friday, Holland, as the titular character, walks into an Armed Forces Career Center, where he is shown explaining to a recruiter that he wants to joint the Army for perspective.

"I've just been seeing on the news, there are kids dying over there," Cherry says. "Guys from Cleveland who are my age just trying to do something good, and here I am feeling sorry for myself because my girlfriend broke up with me."

After confirming he wants to feel "a sense of purpose" by joining the military, Cherry is shown being sworn in to serve with the Army.

Holland's Marvel Cinematic Universe costar Robert Downey Jr. — who plays Tony Stark/Iron Man, a mentor to Holland's Peter Parker/Spider-Man, in the superhero film franchise — rained praise upon Cherry and its cast in a recent Q&A session that also included Holland, actress Ciara Bravo and directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who helmed a number of Marvel movies, including Avengers: Endgame.

"This is one of those movies — Tom, fellas, ladies — that you're gonna wind up, when it comes on in five years, wherever it is in the movie, you're gonna wanna watch it," said Downey, 55. "It's the highest compliment I can pay to a piece of cinema, is it bears re-watching."

He continued, "It's one of those things that really is a mediation, and the fact that all of you infused it with something that has such meaning in this crisis within the crisis within the crisis … and again, God bless our troops and what they go through."

Joe, 49, told Vanity Fair back in November that Holland's Cherry "travels a great distance over a 15-year period" during the events of the film.

"The movie's broken up into six chapters that reflect those different periods, and each one has a different tone. It's shot with different lenses, different production design," he said. "One's got magical realism. Another chapter is absurdism. Another is horror."

Joe added, "There's a bit of gonzo in it. It's raw in its tone. He's a character in existential crisis."

Cherry hits theaters Feb. 26 and begins streaming on AppleTV March 12.
