Any other policeman would be too old for this shit, but Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley, the Beverly Hills Cop, will return to his beat 30 years after the last Beverly Hills Cop movie. A trailer for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, which hits Netflix on July 3, shows that Foley is very much up for this shit, so much so that he thinks he can fly a helicopter over the palm trees while dodging stray bullets in L.A.’s toniest neighborhoods.

The look of abject terror on Murphy’s face and hearing him cry “Shit!” as the chopper ruins somebody’s golf game is worth it. That and all the smack Foley talks as he’s arrested for his stunt: “Y’all are the LEGO cops,” he says. He even has the audacity to call his daughter and ask her to bail him out of jail, and she hangs up on him.

On average, cops retire at age 55, but at 63, Murphy shows he’s far from average. A lot of the trailer doesn’t make sense (why does Beverly Hills have a snow plow that Foley can commandeer? Why is Judge Reinhold’s character in trouble and not retired, too), but that’s half the fun.

The plot revolves around a threat on the life of Foley’s daughter (Taylour Paige) leading Foley to team up with a younger cop, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, to get to the bottom of it. Of course, Reinhold and John Ashton’s character, John Taggart, are still kicking around so they help out, too, and the film also features Paul Reiser, Bronson Pinchot, and Kevin Bacon. Australian filmmaker Mark Molloy, who got an award nomination for his commercial work for Apple a few years back, directed the picture, which Jerry Bruckheimer produced.

“Some of the funniest moments in Axel F are when Eddie’s improvising,” Molloy told Tudum. “For me, a big part of my job was to create the right environment, cast the right people around Eddie to allow him to do what he does best.”
