Following her roles in Disney films such as Get a Clue and Freaky Friday, Lindsay Lohan originated the role of Cady Heron, a former homeschooled student who quickly befriends The Plastics when she transfers to North Shore High School. She'd been acting for years, but the role established Lohan as a Hollywood star.

In 2018, Erika Henningsen originated the role of Cady in the Broadway musical, eventually receiving an Outer Critics Circle Award nomination for the role. She starred in the production until February 2020, when she was replaced by actress Sabrina Carpenter.

In the 2004 film, Rachel McAdams originated the role of Regina George, the most popular girl in school and head of the Plastics. The movie was a breakout moment for her and she was catapulted into superstardom with her subsequent role in The Notebook.

The Regina George torch was eventually passed on to Taylor Louderman, who played the character on Broadway. She received numerous nominations for her role, including at the Tony Awards, Drama League Awards, and Outer Critics Circle Awards. She left the production in September 2019, and was replaced by Reneé Rapp.

After gaining recognition for her role as Regina on Broadway, Rapp made major moves with her fan-favorite role on The Sex Lives of College Girls and her music career. Now, she is set to step back into Regina's Louboutin heels for the musical movie.

Lacey Chabert originated the role of Gretchen Wieners, Regina's second-in-command, whose hair is so big because "it's full of secrets." Though Chabert had already gained prominence as a child actress, with roles on Party of Five and The Wild Thornberrys, the 2004 film was her movie breakout.

Ashley Park later took on the role of Gretchen in the Broadway musical and was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical. In March 2019, Park left the production and was replaced by Krystina Alabado. Though Park isn't reprising her role as Gretchen in the new musical movie, she is set to make a cameo as a French teacher (a possible nod to her success on Netflix's Emily in Paris).

In the musical movie, Gretchen will be played by Bebe Wood, whose past credits include The Real O'Neals and Love, Victor.

Kyle Selig was next to play the hunky football star in the Broadway musical. Though Selig stayed in the musical until its closing in March 2020, he took a temporary leave of absence in 2019, during which his role was played by Cameron Dallas. Fun fact: his love interest onstage, Cady (played by Erica Henningsen) turned into an offstage love story and the two got married in May 2023.

After stealing hearts on The Summer I Turned Pretty, Christopher Briney marks the next heartthrob to take on the role of Aaron Samuels.

In addition to writing the screenplay for the 2004 film and the book for the 2018 musical, Tina Fey starred in the first movie as Ms. Norbury, a math teacher at North Shore High School who mentors Cady.

In the musical, Kerry Butler took over Fey's role, playing triple duty as Ms. Norbury, Mrs. Heron and Mrs. George. Her final performance was in September 2018 and she was replaced by Jennifer Simard.

It only seems fitting that Fey would reprise her role as Ms. Norbury in the new musical movie! We imagine she will still be a "pusher, Cady."
