Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell portray the same character at different ages, Lee Shaw, in Apple TV+'s new MonsterVerse series

Like father, like son!

Kurt Russell and son Wyatt Russell not only play the same character in their new series — they even share a scene together.

On Thursday, Apple TV+ shared a new clip from Monarch: Legacy of Monsters exclusively with PEOPLE that showcases 72-year-old Kurt's character Lee Shaw watching video footage taken from decades prior.

In the show, Kurt's son Wyatt, 37, plays a younger version of Lee, an Army officer, as the series jumps back and forth between time periods while peeling back the mysteries surrounding Monarch, the shadowy organization at the center of the recent Godzilla and King Kong movies.

In the clip, taken from the show's fifth episode, the two Russell men are seen onscreen together for the only time in the series. Lee, in handcuffs and in Monarch's custody, is shown the old footage and even briefly steps into the projector's light — showing Wyatt's likeness overlayed over his real-life father's.

The dual role sees Kurt — who shares Wyatt with his partner Goldie Hawn — as an older Lee reflecting on his involvement with Monarch in the 1950s as his own children begin "following in their father’s footsteps to uncover their family’s connection to the secretive organization," as an official synopsis for the series reads.

"The dramatic saga – spanning three generations – reveals buried secrets and the ways that epic, earth-shattering events can reverberate through our lives," the synopsis adds. The series largely takes place some time after 2014's Godzilla, which kicked off Legendary Pictures' ongoing MonsterVerse.

The father-son duo both spoke to their experience working together to portray the same character at different ages during a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight. "We were being given this opportunity to play the same person, as opposed to the father and son, so we started hammering away at it and saying, 'Let's make this good!' " Kurt said.

"I suddenly found myself saying 'God, Wyatt's going to create this character. I'm going to play him later on in life, so it's all gotta make sense,' " he added of how he approached playing the role. "And I suddenly realized, I've watched him all my life, but I've never examined him."
