How Kate Upton Prepared for Sizzling SI Swimsuit Cover: ‘Consistency Is the Name of the Game’

Kate Upton makes it look easy to grace the cover of magazines like Sports Illustrated Swimsuit — but her trainer is giving fans an inside look at what actually goes into achieving her supermodel physique.

On May 15, Upton's longtime trainer Ben Bruno shared a video to Instagram that highlighted portions of her workout routine as she prepared for the upcoming 60th anniversary celebration cover of SI Swimsuit.

In the video, Upton, 31, can be seen doing full-body strength training using heavy weights, which Bruno says she does about four to fives times per week. She can also be seen running along the beach — Bruno says she does it two to three times a week. And, she has one or two days of rest.

"Big congrats to @kateupton for her appearance on this year’s cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition!" Bruno began his lengthy caption. "She obviously killed it, but what I appreciate most about Kate is that she does things the right way. Models face tremendous pressure, but in the nine years we’ve worked together, Kate has always been great about training and eating in a way that’s both safe and sustainable."

"Training wise, she pushes herself very hard, but she’s also great about listening to her body and not overdoing it," he continued, joking that Upton prefers lifting heavy weights because she "hates anything over 6 reps."

"That’s what we do most of the time, but we also do some cardio 2-3 times a week, either after strength workouts or on separate days. The cardio is a mix of higher intensity intervals and lower intensity steady state work."

Bruno also opened up about Upton's diet, stating that she doesn't "deprive herself or overdiet" — because while it may work in the short term, it "always comes back to bite you in the long run."

"She eats protein at every meal and also eats plenty of fruits, vegetables, and healthy carbs (the heaviest carb meals are usually after strength workouts)," Bruno added. "She splurges a couple times a week but usually dials that back before shoots."

All in all, he wrote, Upton follows one specific rule when training for something like the SI cover shoot: "Consistency is the name of the game."

"Kate is the model of that," he added. "She sets an amazing example for women to follow, and I’m so grateful for all that she’s done to promote strength training for women because it means a lot more coming from someone that looks like her than from this hairy Italian."

Just this week, Sports Illustrated Swimsuit announced that the Layover actress would be one of three models doing a solo cover in celebration of its anniversary issue. The sizzling-hot cover shoot shows Upton a red-and-pink ruffled and pinstripe bikini with her hair styled in casual beachy waves, as well as in a sexy, black lace-up one-piece.

Upton has been modeling for SI since she her debut in 2011. That year, she was crowned Rookie of the Year, and posed for her first solo cover in 2012 (and the following year, she posed for the same cover again). In 2014, she starred on the flip cover, and in 2017, she posed for the cover again, making her the first model to have multiple covers.

The anniversary editions also feature group photoshoot with more than 50 past models, including Christie BrinkleyMolly SimsMartha StewartPaulina PorizkovaTyra Banks and more.

“It's such a huge honor,” Upton told PEOPLE in April back posing for the cover of the anniversary edition.

“It really speaks to really where fashion is going and the message that [Sports Illustrated Swimsuit’s editor in chief] MJ Day wants to put out — women supporting women, showing different body types and having women speak for different things they believe in."
