See Inside Kerry Washington's 'Beautiful' and 'Elevated' New York City Apartment

When Kerry Washington was hunting for an apartment in New York City, she wanted to make sure she had plenty of room for her family.

“We spent a lot of time looking for a place that had enough space for our whole crew, our posse,” Washington tells Architectural Digest in their April 2019 issue of the home she rented on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The Scandal alum and husband Nnamdi Asomugha share two children, Isabelle Amarachi, 4, and Caleb Kelechi, 2. Asomugha also has a 12-year-old daughter from a previous relationship, and Washington calls herself a mother of three.

But what was outside of the space was just as important.

In particular, “That view!” she says. “We spend a lot of time outdoors in L.A., so it was important to me that my family could still feel that connection.”

Washington, who grew up in the Bronx, returned home to New York City to play the lead role in Christopher Demos-Brown’s American Son on Broadway, following a seven-season stint on TV as political fixer Olivia Pope.

While their primary residence is in Los Angeles, creating a family home on the East Coast was just as important to her. So she teamed up with Restoration Hardware to transform the empty space into a functional, cozy retreat where she could entertain her loved ones.

In the great room, Washington set up two sofas, an elm wood coffee table inspired by the box-form furnishings from China’s Ming Dynasty in the 17th century, and geometric brass lamps.

In the dining room, she opted for a table made from reclaimed oak, while the window is decorated with playful heart cut-outs.

Much of the rest of the home features 3-D printed paintings from Restoration Hardware’s collaboration with General Public, an art-publishing company founded by Washington’s friend and former Scandal costar Portia de Rossi.

For many of the rooms, the designers convinced Washington to stray from her typical off-white color scheme for the walls, and instead went with a dark charcoal (see the full feature for her moodier spaces).

“It was fun to work with a team that pushes you past your comfort zone,” she told the publication. “RH created something beautiful and elevated yet totally livable.”
